Devotions - Growing From Five Minutes to Two Hours - One Step at a Time - Part 1 ~ by A Sister in Christ

     When I first began having regular devotions-quiet times, I would watch the clock and five minutes seemed like a long time.  At other times it just seemed, well, dry.

     In reading biographies of men and women who meet with the Lord for two hours, commenting that, the busier their day was the more important it was to “abide” with Him in the morning, seemed wonderful, but impossible to me.  So in my heart I asked, as it is written in Matthew 7: 7-8 ~
“Keep on asking and it will be given you; 
                keep on seeking and you will find;
                                keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you.  
For everyone who keeps on asking receives; and
                he who keeps on seeking finds; and
                                to him who keeps on knocking, [the door] will be opened.”  (KJ Amplified)

     Now that unfathomable distance between five minutes and two hours some thirty years later is becoming a reality.  I am not at the place where I abide every day for two hours, but it is wonderful when I can.  The time is rich, sweet, and goes by so fast.

     During my quiet time these are the aspects that make my time with the Lord full and fulfilling.

1. Blessing

     Our time together begins with asking my Father for His blessing and His wisdom.

     Someone once shared a helpful part of her devotion time that has been very beneficial.  She matter of factly stated, that she holds out her hands, and asked God to bless her.  Just at Jesus, asked His FATHER to bless the five loaves, and two fishes. 

     At times, I will place my hands on my head and ask Father to bless my thoughts,
                help me to take every thought captive,
                                to discern the flaming darts,
                                                lies of the enemy, Satan. 
                                Bless my eyes that I will see and perceive things from HIS perspective.
                                    Bless my ears that I will ear and understand. 
                                                Bless my mouth that I would be careful of what I say,
                                                                that God would be in control of my tongue,
                                                                                that it would be used for blessing,
                                                                                                that it would speak words of life. 
                                Then placing my hands over my heart,
                                                asking God to bless the meditation of my heart,
                                                                for out of it comes the issues of life, and
                                                                                out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
                                 Bless my hands…. bless my feet… . 

     I remember one day being very sick for months, and confined to bed.  I held out my hands and stated, “Father God I have not even five loaves, and two fishes, figuratively speaking, but I ask you to bless my day….”  He has taught me that I can come with nothing, for HE is able to bless, and multiply, just ask.

     I love these words by Martin Luther: 

“God creates out of nothing.
Therefore until a man is nothing,
God can make nothing out of him.” 

     Recently an older Christian leader spoke of his grandfather.  Stating that he was a simple man with little education, yet at the end of his life, was extremely successful; he attributed this to his humility.  When his grandfather prayed, he always said, “Lord its Earl, and I lack.” 

     It is written in James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (KJV)

     James 1:5 “And if, in the process, any of you does not know how to meet any particular problem he has only to ask God—who gives generously to all men without making them feel foolish or guilty—and he may be quite sure that the necessary wisdom will be given him.” (JB Phillips)

     When I come to spend time with my Father, my Lord, I begin by holding out my hands, asking for HIS blessing, acknowledging my need, my lack, my complete dependence on HIM.

     It is such a simple beginning, but the rewards are just like the multiplying of the loaves and fishes.

2.  Thanksgiving and Praise

     Another key aspect of my time with Father is written in Psalm 100:4,  “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”  (KJV)

” Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and a thank offering and into His courts with praise! Be thankful and say so to Him, bless and affectionately praise His name!”  (KJAmp)

     This portion of expressing thanksgiving for His many benefits, helps turn my heart toward JEHOVAH, the great I AM.
the smell of fresh baked bread…
                a good night sleep….(pillow, bed, blankets…)
                                eyes to see…
                                         the gift of a letter in the mailbox…
                                                perfectly designed air to breath …
                                                                the sound of many waters…
                                                                                HIS forgiveness …  HIS Word ….  HIS love….

     On mornings where I have extra time, I will add a time of singing.  It started with different hymn books and sheets of paper, close to my place where I meet with the Lord.  Over the years I have collected favorite hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs that encourage my heart.  Now, they are all arranged in one three ring binder, in top loading sheet protectors, alphabetically.  This has been helpful to have all my favorites in one place.

     I find this time helps me to enter into HIS presence, and leave the world behind.

3. Who God is and Who we are in Christ

     The next facet has had amazing benefits.

     A person I greatly admire said that praying the names of God was life changing in their spiritual life, and especially their prayer life.  It was a simple beginning.  From a two by three inch card with names of God, I began reminding myself of who my amazing heavenly Father, His Son, and the Holy Spirit are.   As I read HIS Word, I saw many wonderful attributes, and beautiful descriptions of God (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit) in HIS numerous names.  To make it easier to meditate on HIS names I started a word document.  During my devotion time I would jot down a new name and the Scripture on a note pad.  Each year it grew, and after three years, I now have a list of 178 names with Scriptures.
     Each day I will read, at least one of the name of God.  Many different things can take place during this time; meditation,
                memorization of a verse,
                                prayer,
                                                praise,
                                                                thanksgiving. 
     This aspect will follow me throughout the day.  Just the past weekend I read El Olam.  One of the Scriptures listed was Isaiah 26:4. 
First, I meditated on the beautiful Words,
                then memorized the rich passage,
                                from that came a heart of prayer. 
     Later that afternoon, as I was praying for someone, I prayed Isaiah 26:4. 

          At a Becoming Beautiful to God Seminar, a beautiful testimony was given on how, reading the Scriptures that remind us of who we are in Christ was life changing.  After receiving the helps from the young lady who gave the testimony arrived, my intentions were good, but to be honest I hadn’t been consistent.  After studying God’s names, my spirit is so encouraged I would skip over it.
So God allowed me to hear the truth again; to hear how important this is to life as a believer.  He stated,
“Behavior will never give you your identity.” 
                We can’t go by our feelings;
                                we need to live by faith, who God says we are. 
                                                “We don’t always look like who we are. 
                                                                You spend your life becoming who you are. . . . 
                                                                                Knowing who you are will change who you are.” 
     It important to know who God is, but our Father also wants us to know who we really are.

     After spending three years of studying the names of God, I went through an extremely difficult time.  It was the three years spent knowing God that increased my trust and hope in HIM.

4. Memorization and Meditation (M&M’s)

     Memorization is putting the Word in my mind and meditation is getting the Word into my heart, by keeping it before my eyes, 
                pondering on it,
                                mulling it over,
                                                chewing on it more than once,
     I remember memorizing and meditating on Exodus 20:3.  The first part of the verse was the part I just kept chewing on, it tasted so good; “Thou shalt have, Thou shalt have, Thou shalt have…my, that tastes good … (It also takes a lot of repetition for me to get it) Thou shalt have, Thou shalt have, Thou shalt have…  Father God why does that taste so good?” 
                “If you have me, do you need anything else?” was HIS reply. 
     Then my meditation lead to all that HE is,
                why would I need any other god,
                                 if I have the Creator,
                                                my Help, my Shepherd, my El Shaddai, … . 
                                                                God if I have YOU I don’t want any other gods before me. 
                                                                                Nothing can compare to YOU.                                                                                                  YOU over shadow any other competing 
                                                                                                                                                affection… 

     To help with M&M’s, I have started printing out Scriptures that have been memorized on pretty paper, which are placed in a top loading sheet protectors, then put in my three ring prayer note book.  This makes it easy to review. 

     For Scriptures being worked on, I just started something new.  It is more of a work sheet with the Scripture. 
 I will underline words that are difficult for me. 
                Highlight words that satisfy my heart. 
                                Journal what God shows/reveals to me. 
                                                Copy the verse in more than one version.
                                                                Make note of cross references. 
                                                                                Write down key words in the Strong’s. 
                                                                                                Jot down insights given by the Holy Spirit. 
     Then as the Scripture is memorized, my goal is to know the root word, other dimensions of a key word, to know the verse intimately.

     When the portion of Scripture is memorized and meditated on, these notes will go behind the Scripture on pretty paper for easy review, and referencing.

     M&M’s can be a part of my quiet time, but it is something that is with me through the day.  “O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day.” Psalms 119:97     

     A beginning on Psalm 119:97 might look like this.
O how I (intensely) love thy law (that directs, guides, teaches, makes straight, points me forward; because it guides, instructs me in the way of righteousness, points me onward to peace, truth, and happiness, it is my school master to bring me to Christ)!, it is my meditation (reflection, my devotion, my prayer) all the day.                                                                                       

Also find Scripture you can sing, it uses both sides of the brain and makes it easier to remember and meditate on.

Spending the Time ~ by Teresa

         Dear sisters, I am grateful and humbled to have this opportunity to encourage you in your pursuit of spending time with Jesus. It is something close to my heart, yet I myself still have much to learn and grow in this area. I’m eager to take a closer look at the importance of spending quality time with Jesus and how to make it more meaningful.

“Spending the Time” – it is just that: spending: “to pay out; to use up; to give” – our time: the fleeting moments we have here on earth. It requires a purposeful effort to take some time in our busy day to spend with the Lord in prayer and reading His Word. We need to be motivated and encouraged to do this as it doesn’t “just happen.” If we desire to grow in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus, we will want to give of our time by spending it in His presence. It is a sacrifice and it will cost us something, but it will be worth it.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1

Why We Should Spend Time with Jesus Each Day

~Obedience to God - Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Isaiah 55:6

        So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

~Following Christ’s example - And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He departed and went out to a desolate place, and there He prayed. Mark 1:35

~We can’t grow without it - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:4-5

~To receive wisdom for our life - The unfolding of Your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. Psalm 119:130

I am so grateful that my parents set the example of spending time each morning reading God’s Word and praying before the busy activities of the day started. I was impressed by their quiet example and have since made it a daily pattern in my own life by setting aside the first moments of the day to seek the Lord and learn from His ways. Yet, when something has become a habit, there is the danger of viewing it as just a routine or another item to check off of our to-do list. While forming good habits and disciplines are important, we want to be careful to always keep in mind the great privilege that we have in approaching the throne of God in prayer and in reading His holy, infallible Words that He has preserved through the ages.

Our time set aside with Jesus may not always be fun or full of “mountain-top” experiences. God wants us to continue to be faithful to seek Him even when we don’t “feel” like it. We especially need to be in the Word if we are feeling dry and distant.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

How to Cultivate a Quiet Time with Jesus

~Have a set aside time and place

 

          If we don’t plan to spend some time each day to seek the Lord, it most likely won’t happen. Figure out what is the best time of day, how much time you can spend, and where you’d be able to focus on Jesus uninterrupted. (I have found that mornings usually are best, as it helps to start the day guided by God’s Word.) If you discover that you are having a hard time sticking to your plan, find someone who will hold you accountable and pray for you.

~Minimize distractions

          The less distractions we have during our sacred meeting with the Almighty God, the better. Turn off your cell phone or put it in another room. Close your laptop. Play only peaceful, background music (if any) while you are reading God’s Word. One very helpful commitment that I’ve tried to make each day is to wait to check my e-mails or get on the Internet until after I’ve had my quiet time with the Lord. It really helps to keep my priorities straight.

~Focus on the Word

While devotional books are helpful, the most important book to read during your time with Jesus is the very words that He has spoken and inspired. The Bible is full of truth, encouragement, wisdom, and correction.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

          God’s Word contains all that we need for living this life in a Godly way. It is brimming with precious promises that we can claim.

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence, by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 2 Peter 1:3-4

~Cultivate Humility

Don’t announce your quiet time to the whole world - Keep it a secret between you and your Father.  Jesus Himself said: “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:6 (Emphasis added)

~Draw near

          Since we are walking by faith on this earth, and cannot see God, sometimes it is easy to forget that He is always with us, waiting for us to draw near to Him. We have the wonderful promise that when we draw near to Him, He WILL draw near to us. 

Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. James 4:8

~Pray!

Don’t underestimate prayer. If you want to have a vital quiet time with the Lord where you can glean truths from His word and draw nearer to Him, pray about it! Ask Him to help you remain faithful in your pursuit of Him each day. Then talk to Him about anything and everything.

Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Psalm 62:8 If you are not sure how to pray, use The Lord’s Prayer as a guide (Luke 11:1-4). You can also think of ACTS: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication (or requests).

~Walk with Jesus throughout your day

Remember, that while it is important to have a specific time and place to seek the Lord each day, our time with Him shouldn’t be limited to just one slot of time in our schedule. He has promised to never leave us nor forsake us. He is with us every moment of every day! We should turn our thoughts towards Him throughout the day, wherever we are, and in whatever we are doing.

And He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14

The Results of Spending Time with Jesus

~We will become more and more like Jesus

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18 (Emphasis added.)

~We will grow to love Jesus more

          The more we learn about who Jesus is, and all that He has done for us, we will grow in our love for Him. We will find Him to be our greatest treasure.

~Our lives will produce the fragrance of Christ

But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 2 Corinthians 2:14

~We will have more love for others

When we spend time focusing on the Lord, our eyes will get off of ourselves, and we’ll learn to love others more. We’ll be able to get our priorities right and so have real JOY (Jesus first, Others second, and Yourself last.)

~Our hearts will be filled with God’s peace

When we begin our day resting in the Lord’s presence, His peace will permeate our lives.

~We will become more discerning

Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Acts 17:11

So, dear sisters, come to the Lord Jesus and don’t delay. Set aside some time in your busy schedule to seek His face, read His Word, and tell Him what’s on your mind. Come in faith knowing that He will reward those who earnestly seek Him. It will be eternally worth it!

          And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. Hebrews 11:6

Having Devotions that Change Your Life - Part 2 ~ Amy Vest

The Ingredients:
The most important ingredient of our quiet time is our heart attitude. In order for our time with the Lord to have a transforming effect, we must truly have a heart that is hungering for Him. Seek with all that you are to truly meet with the Lord. Be assured that He is "...a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." – Hebrews 11:6.

A good devotional time starts long before you enter it. I have found amazing results from turning my heart to the Lord in prayer and meditating on Scripture as I fall asleep at night. When I wake up, my spirit is already in fellowship with the Lord! (Also, get to bed at a good time so that you are awake and alert for your time with Him.)

As you wake up, immediately turn your heart to the Lord in prayer. Roll out of bed and land on your knees – keep praying. Tell the Lord good morning, that you love Him, thank Him for the new day, commit yourself and the day to Him. Seek to come into fellowship with the Lord before you see anyone else. It is a perfect start to the day!

Either continue on in your devotions right then, or get ready for the day so that you are awake for quality time with the Lord.

Find a quiet place (if possible) where you can be with the Lord and hear from Him. My two favorite places for my quiet time are my bedroom, and a bench in our yard.

Schedule your time with the Lord generally so that you can make the most of it, and so that you can get everything in. (Otherwise, if you are like me, you may tend to drift, or find that all your time is spent on one thing while other things are missed.) For example, if you have thirty minutes for your quiet time, you could spend ten minutes praying, ten minutes reading your Bible, and ten minutes memorizing and meditating on Scripture, and recording what the Lord has shown you in your devotions.I have chosen to do most of my Scripture memory during the day by carrying the verse(s) I am memorizing with me on a piece of paper. This way I can spend more time in prayer. Find what works best for you with the time that you have! (I just gave the thirty minutes as an example for how to segment your time – if you can spend more time with the Lord, that's great!)

It is so key to start your devotions by coming into the Lord’s presence and fellowshipping with Him through prayer. This way your spirit is in tune with Him as you read His Word. I have found it beneficial, though, to save the majority of my prayer time until after I have read my Bible. This helps me to avoid getting lost in prayer and running out of time to read my Bible. Reading Scripture before the majority of my prayer time also helps me to focus better in prayer and to know how to pray.

Before you read your Bible, ask the Lord to speak to you through His Word – to help you to know Him more, to open your eyes to understand what you read, and to show you how to live. It is amazing the things that God has to show us if we will simply ask Him and search His Word! His Word is so living, and I am constantly learning how personally it applies to every part of my life! (You will find it a priceless treasure to keep a journal of things that the Lord has shown you, so that you can remember them for years to come!)

Once your Bible reading is finished, pray. As you pray, remember that the Lord is right there with you. He listens to every word you say, knows how you are feeling, and always has the perfect solution. Prayer is made up of many parts, including pouring out your heart to the Lord, praising Him, dwelling/abiding in His presence, listening for Him to speak to you, bringing your requests before Him, examining yourself before Him, confessing and repenting of any sin He reveals to you, worshiping Him for who He is, and thanking Him. I have also found great blessing in singing hymns to the Lord and in praying His Word to Him.

A consistent balance of all these things is essential to a well-rounded, vibrant, and stable walk with the Lord. We need so much to be in fellowship with Him, to share our heart with Him, and to have Him speak to us! As we spend time with the Lord and experience the priceless treasure of His presence, we can’t help but long for our time with Him.

Other Ingredients:
If you find yourself still having a hard time being consistent in this precious time with the Lord, find someone to keep you accountable for having a daily quiet time. Often knowing that another person will be checking up on us gives us the extra motivation we need to do something!

If you have allowed your quiet time with the Lord to slip from your daily schedule, you can start fresh now! Our Lord is so faithful to us even when we are not faithful to Him. He delights when we return to our times with Him. He is not waiting for you with His arms crossed and a frowning reprimand for your inconsistency. Rather, He is there with open arms and great delight to have you with Him again. We have no reason not to run into His presence with a renewed resolve to consistently have a quiet time with Him!

As we take this daily quiet time with the Lord, let us remember the reason we are doing it. It is to know our Lord in a deeper way and to be transformed more and more into His image. The exciting thing is, our devotions are not the end of our time with the Lord – they are simply a springboard to a day of fellowship with Him!

This time in the presence of our loving Lord is something we cannot afford to forgo. Seek with all that you are to have this vital time with Him, dear sisters! It will transform your life, bless you, and cause you to know the Lord like never before. There is truly nothing more important in life! When we stand before our Lord at the end of this life, we will not regret a minute that we have spent in time alone with Him.

Having Devotions that Change Your Life - Part 1 ~ by Amy Vest

Time with the Lord is the sweetest thing on earth! It is the thing most necessary to draw us closer to Him! Through it we come to know Him, to understand His ways, and to see how we are to live. If we spend this time correctly, it will transform our lives.

Yet why is our time with the Lord one of the things that most easily slides from our schedule, or a time when we struggle to stay focused? Often it is because we forget its importance in our lives and the impact that it has on our relationship with the Lord, who we are, and the difference our lives make for eternity.

When we ask the question, "What is the most important thing in life?", the first thing that probably comes to our mind is – the Lord and our relationship with Him. This is absolutely the right answer, but I sometimes wonder if we live our lives in line with this answer. Friends, I am writing this from my heart and personal experience. We spend so much time talking and learning about it, but do we actually take the time to cultivate that personal relationship with the Lord? Or do we become so busy doing things for the Lord that we don’t take time to be with Him? We take time to do all the things that are required to stay alive – eating, sleeping, showering, etc. In the same way, our quiet time with the Lord is so necessary for our spiritual survival.

My devotions are my most treasured part of the day. I cherish my time with the Lord, but at times I find myself allowing the length of it to be shortened, or struggling with becoming distracted during it. I find that the cause of these problems is that I have unconsciously undermined the importance of my time with the Lord. I have allowed less important things or activities (sleep, tasks, etc.) to take my time or distract me from the most important Person and activity in my life.

Together we are going to look together at: 1. The immeasurable importance and treasure of our time with the Lord, 2. The ingredients to how we can make it a meaningful and life-changing part of our lives, and 3. Other ideas!

Our time with the Lord is so vital to our walk with Him! When we truly come into the Lord’s presence, meet with Him, and come to know Him in deeper and deeper ways, it will transform our lives. For as we truly meet with Him and come to know more of who He is, our love for Him will grow. As a result, we will desire to please Him with all of our lives, and our eyes will be opened in greater ways to who and how we should be, with the incredible comfort that He will be with us and give us the strength for each step. He is an incredible Lord, Savior, and Friend!

The saying "Who you spend time with, you become like," rings so true in a special way in our time with the Lord. We long to be like Jesus, don’t we? It is through our time spent with Him that we are changed into His likeness. As we meet with Him and experience for ourselves who our Lord is, we cannot help but become more like Him. When we come to know Him in a very real and personal way, we find that He is all that we need and that He fulfills every longing of our heart. It is so necessary that we come to this point of knowing and experiencing our Lord personally – for that is what transforms us! In coming into His presence, spending time in His Word, and communing with Him in prayer, we come to know His heart, receive His mind, and be filled with His likeness. Isn’t it a precious thing that the One who created and controls the universe loves us and delights in spending time with us?! It is the sweetest, most transforming time!

When we meet with the Lord, He gives us the strength to accomplish all that He has called us to do. Our quiet time with Him is the fuel for our spiritual engines – we will burn out otherwise. In our quiet times, as we surrender ourselves to the Lord as vessels for His use, He will fill us with His Spirit and do amazing things in and through us. My friends, we have a special treasure in our youth to focus solely on the Lord and to grow in our relationship with Him! Let us not waste it! This is the time when we are laying the foundation for our lives. The choices we make and the things we do now will drastically impact who we become. Our quiet time with the Lord (or lack thereof) plays a big role in this. Isn’t that an amazing, sobering thought?

The incredible delight and fulfillment that comes from knowing, obeying, and spending time with the Lord results in a truly exciting life. Let’s pour ourselves wholeheartedly into seeking the Lord and treasuring our time with Him! For He has promised us, "And you will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart." – Jeremiah 29:13. The results will transform your life and bring you greater joy and fulfillment than you ever imagined!

What is God doing in your heart so far?
